Jeremiah 4.1–18

Psalm 71

Galatians 3.15–22

John 4.43–end

Jeremiah 4.1–18

“If you will return , O Israel, return to me,” declares the Lord, If you put your detestable idols out of my sight and no longer go astray, and if in a truthful, just and righteous way you swear, as sure as the Lord lives, then the nations will be blessed by him and in him they will glory.”

I was reminded recently to think deeply about what I put my trust in and what my idols are. Do I trust in God, and ask him to support my needs or do I look to other things for validation and security? It is easy to say that I should focus on money or work or other things but the truth is that that is not what God wants. God wants us to focus on Him. He wants us to return to him and not put our faith in other things, things that are not of God but rather of the world we have created ourselves. The world we have created is one full of pain, of sorrow, of war and anger. We have created this world for our own ends, not God’s and until we return to God we cannot experience His full glory, His full peace, His full majesty.

During Lent, it is a time to examine where our hearts lie and what our idols are. Is it with God? Are we ready to give up the fabricated idols we have – money, power, ambition and return to Him? Are we ready to do our best to live in the way God asks us to or will we be like the Israel of Jeremiah, a land that was not seeing God’s full glory because they had turned away from God? We have a choice, and we have God to support us and love us and help us live in the good way.
