Lent Meditation

John 11.28-44

I chose this passage because of the words that appear in The Gospel of John for the first time just a few chapters further on Jn13. v23 “the disciple who Jesus loved”. This special bond that is so touching spoke to me as a child in simplistic terms ie “ if Jesus loved John so much he must love me now.

Today’s passage shows just how much we have a God who cares. V.33 tells us that Jesus was ‘deeply moved and troubled’ – Jesus empathises with the emotional anguish of his family and their friends.

Although Jesus’ anger could have been attributed to his anger over the power of death that had overcome his friend, it seems to me His agony is much more an indication of sympathy. So much so that we have the famous v35 “Jesus wept” - again ‘wept with sympathy’.

For me the fact that Jesus wept in this way conveys His real compassion and sympathy for His beloved friends. And because He does understand and feels what we feel, he wants us to bring our needs, our hurts and our deepest pains to Him – are we ready to respond?

When Jesus requested the stone at the cave’s entrance be removed (v39) Martha replied in protest . But, Jesus took the time to patiently, explain and address her concerns. When the stone was taken away, Jesus claimed His confidence in the Father and His knowledge that in the Father nothing is impossible....... !!!!
