In Psalm 63 David draws on the image of a barren, thirst-creating desert to illustrate his craving for deeper knowledge of God. Recently, in my first direct experience of the Arabian desert, I was transfixed by the combination of vast space, total silence and absence of distractions, the absolute antithesis of the nearby city, all familiar to Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist and Jesus Himself. Small wonder the Desert Fathers found it perfect for tuning in to that Still, Small Voice; we still owe much to their vision. In the same psalm David speaks of the rather different silence of the “night watches”; I particularly sense Satan’s wiles when awake in the small hours and am striving to turn those periods, as David clearly did, towards stilling my mind, drawing closer to God and knowing Him more closely instead of letting the following day’s routine molehills become stark, threatening mountains...
