Can you picture in your mind the religious leaders learning that a lame man had been cured and was carrying his mat on the Sabbath? They certainly did not participate in the joy of that holy moment, or accept the significance of the event providing yet more evidence that Jesus was the Son of God. They missed this because they were so wrapped up in their own rules; the keeping of the Sabbath was more important than the welfare of God's own people.
But before
we wag our fingers in righteous indignation, how many times have we let our own
personal rules impede someone's welfare? How often have we let our own personal
rules keep us from rejoicing with God's people? Let's make sure that we do not
fall into the same personal trap that caught the religious leaders in this
story: Love people more than policy.
