The certainty of God's promise

'Melchizedek Blesses Abraham' by Simeon Solomon, 1840-1905, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA

From Art in the Christian Tradition, a project of the Vanderbilt Divinity Library, Nashville, TN. http://diglib.library.vanderbilt.edu/act-imagelink.pl?RC=50528 [retrieved February 13, 2021]. Original source: www.mfa.org/.

I wonder if you have experienced times when you do not know what to do, but you want God at the centre of your decision? I firmly believe that if we ask specifically for guidance in these situations, God does not hold back on a response, which often translates into a promise.

We see this applied retrospectively to Abraham in today's passage in Hebrews. God gave a promise on oath to Abraham. Abraham "wait(ed) patiently"......... how difficult is that in today's impatient culture of instantaneous experience!

An oath, and a promise fulfilled over time illustrate God's "unchanging nature", and the hope that this engenders. Such certainty meant that Abraham could, and we can, be "greatly encouraged".

The key to the whole passage is that we should see "this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure". And to round things off nicely, the writer to the Hebrews sees hope meeting with priestly Jesus in the "inner sanctuary", where it is Jesus' role to minister that hope to us.

So praying in faith is easy......! Well, not always, but our verses today might certainly help!
