Revelation 21.1-8, Apocalypse 21.1-8
“Compassion” means, according to the LITTLE OXFORD
ENGLISH DICTIONARY (ninth edition 2006) “sympathetic pity and concern for the
sufferings of other people”.
Here, as all along the Gospel, Jesus shows us his
divine compassion for his people, especially for those who are the most
vulnerable, disadvantaged and marginalized. He teaches us his compassion.
Although we will never be equal to his generosity, we must endeavour to follow
in his footsteps. In our case, however, compassion for others, is at the same
time compassion for ourselves. Each one of us may be in the position of the good
Samaritan or alternatively in that of the man robbed and left half dead along
the road. Who knows if we could be one day like these migrants of the last
months knocking desperately at our doors, who are starving, thirsty, naked and
with no shelter? Each one of them mirrors the visage of Jesus. Woe to us if we
will hear from His Mouth on the last day: “I was hungry and you gave me no
food, I was stranger and you did not welcome me!”
