Answering Jesus’ need
John 4:7 'Give me something to drink'
“If you stop and think a moment it is evident that any-one out in the midday sun in Palestine, would be in need of water, even the Son of God. ( The Gospel stories never contain all the details, but I imagine that she gave Him the water He requested before the conversation went on – that is, Jesus expressed a need and allowed her to minister to Him before He ministered to her – what an example for us)! The whole Gospel can be read in terms of Jesus being in need, from Gabriel asking Mary to provide Jesus with a mother, to Jesus asking Peter to 'Feed my sheep'. A large part of the idea of the Incarnation is about God emptying Himself, choosing to give up power - as Rowan Williams said referring to this recently on a visit to Belgium: 'the divine renunciation of compulsion and control'. So Jesus needs us - what can that mean? Are we willing to respond?
And are we willing to imitate our Lord, and ask Him, and each other, for the help we need?”
