Where’s my dinner? Où est mon diner?
Imagine it's your birthday and you are going to have a party. You've invited lots of friends and you're going to have your favourite dinner followed by the best desert ever! But something goes wrong – there's no special dinner, no desert and all your friends are about to arrive! What will you do? How do you feel? Angry, confused, embarrassed, scared... But there is some food in the house – some bread and cheese! Not exactly party food.
But in the story in Matthew's gospel there's a crowd of over 4000 people out in the countryside. They've been having a feast of a different kind. They've been listening to Jesus and they've forgotten everything else. They've even forgotten that they need to eat! But Jesus, He's not worried, He's not upset. Instead He's concerned for the crowd. He has compassion for them. He wants to give them something to eat. And He asks His disciples about it.
But the disciples see the huge crowd and nowhere to get food. What are they going to do, they can't feed 4000. What are they thinking? How are they feeling? Worried, out of their depth, panicky, angry – not my problem? Then Jesus asks how much food there actually is. Seven loaves of bread and a few fish. Can that feed 4000? Jesus told the crowd to sit down, took the bread and fish, gave thanks for it, broke it, gave it to he disciples who gave it to the crowd. Everyone had enough to eat and there were seven baskets full of food left over – more than they had started with! What do you think the disciples would be feeling now? What would they be thinking? Imagine you had been one of the crowd, or even a disciple – what would you be thinking and feeling?
