Day 25 of Lent +++ Lesser Festival of Thomas Cranmer, archbishop, Reformation martyr, 1556 +++ Do not fear: I love you

Do not fear: I love you

Right into the leaden darkness of exile and dispersion,
Shines a bright ray of light.
God speaks to his people, addressed as a single person: Israel/Jacob.
Into the collective depression of his people,
God speaks: Do not fear!
In tender words, God reminds his people of his parental role
and his love:

I love you.
You are precious in my sight.
Do not fear – I will be with you.
Do not be afraid – I am with you.

God promises to his people, to his sons and daughters, that he will gather them and bring them back.

Words of comfort, spoken into the current darkness.
The promise of return, given to those in exile today.
A small ray of hope.
God’s future breaking into the present.

I wonder…
… what will it be like, this place God brings us to? What does it look like, how does it feel?
… as part of God’s people, among all the other daughters and sons, what is going to be my role in God’s future?
… how does God’s promised future shape my life today?
… how do I respond in prayer to God’s promise?
