In today’s passage Jesus declares being the Light of
the World to which the Pharisees react rather hostilely. Their reaction isn’t
that surprising. Light was the first thing God made after having formed the
earth. Physical light is necessary for physical life and in the same way,
spiritual light is necessary for spiritual life. Claiming to be the true
spiritual light is certainly a bold statement to make, for many not easy to
accept. But to those who do believe the statement it is such a wonderful
promise. Just as God made the
physical light to shine in the darkness and to make the world liveable, He sent
his son Jesus to shine in our everyday lives and light up our paths. As his
followers we will never have to walk in darkness all alone.
At this
time of Lent, when we dwell upon the darkness, Jesus, the Light of the World,
had to endure for our sake, let’s take some time to reflect on the
areas in our own lives which need to be fully opened up for his light to come
in and also on the places surrounding us which need to see more of his light.
