I
clearly remember the moment that Charlie, my daughter, began to recognize her
own name. It was amazing. She would turn to look at us when we said her name,
when we were talking about her, and when she heard us, she would usually laugh
and smile. She was and is learning to be
known.
In this
famous passage from the Gospel of John, Jesus names himself as the Good
Shepherd. This familiar image is evocative, as it is throughout Scripture.
Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, calls each sheep by name and they know his voice.
He leads through every danger, even up to the point of giving up his life for
the sheep -- not because he has to, but because he chooses to, because of his
love for the sheep. When God calls us the sheep of God’s pasture, the sheep are
God’s own people. When Jesus names himself as the Good Shepherd, he is
reminding us that we are his sheep and he will care for us. Our responsibility
is to recognize him for who he is.
As we
continue our journey through Lent and towards Holy Week and the mystery of
Easter, may we draw close to the Good Shepherd. May we learn to hear his voice
calling our names, bringing us back to the sheepfold. May we follow closely
after Jesus, the Good Shepherd, through every dangerous place and into the
peace of the good pasture.
