It is the feast
of the ‘Tabernacle’, Jesus goes down in secret to ‘Judea’. Having healed a
paralytic on the Sabbath, he has broken the Law and people are on the lookout
for him. Feelings are mixed, there is widespread whispering going on. Halfway
through the feast he goes to the temple court and starts to teach. The Jews are
amazed and lots of them doubt. Imaging this scene today, we are in the
parliament, ‘Angela’ has just finished another speech on Greece and more
cuts. Suddenly a man burst in and before
security realizes what has happened, he grabs the microphone and starts
speaking, challenging our beliefs, our rules he puts in challenges the written
law. Fearless for his own safety,
driven by his convictions he says: ‘My teaching is not my own, it comes from
the one who sent me’. Haven’t I heard
that somewhere before whispers my neighbor Hermann? Isn’t that the son of the
carpenter? You mean the one from ‘Alsemberg’, I reply? Yes he says. Here you
have this young man from down the street, no degree’s, no SUV, no pinstripe
suit, he isn’t even wearing a Rollex, shaking verbally the whole Cenacle on its
foundations by his words, saying ‘My teaching is not my own, it comes from the
one who sent me’ and adding before being ushered away, ‘Stop judging by mere
appearances and make a right judgment’. What a scene, what an adventure
So today let us
ask God through Jesus Christ our saviour that he may inspire, guide, all people
in position of power and decision. So that the new laws, the cuts and the
restriction they pass are just and include provisions for all the needy, the
sick, the poor and the homeless, already hard-hit by fait are tested even more so by this current economic
and financial decline.
